Radiation Oncologist

A/Prof Karen Taylor has been a Radiation Oncologist for three decades. Karen initially trained as a Physician in the United Kingdom in the 1980s, completing her Clinical Oncology training, including a Masters in Oncology in Edinburgh in 1997. She then came to Australia and practised general Radiation Oncology until 2003, after which she developed a clinical interest in breast cancer and subsequently specialised exclusively in breast cancer management. She worked at the William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre at the Alfred Hospital for 20 years, also providing a consultation Radiation Oncology service at Cabrini Malvern since 1999. She has worked for GenesisCare at Cabrini Malvern since 2017, also consulting at Cabrini Brighton.

Karen’s special interests include optimising dose and delivery of breast radiotherapy using deep inspiration breath hold, intensity modulated and volumetric arc radiotherapy. She is passionate about surface guided radiotherapy using AlignRT and no tattoo techniques. Karen is also in involved in the evaluation of DCISionRT, a new tool to personalise treatment plans for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ.

Karen is an A/Professor at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Monash University. She is involved in clinical research and contributes to both Australian and International trials. Karen has worked on eviQ guideline committees, breast cancer expert working groups developing Optimal Care Pathways and the Victorian Integrated Cancer Services Breast Cancer Tumour Summit. She is a member of Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group, Australian Society of Breast Diseases, Australian and New Zealand Breast Cancer Tumour Group, European Society Therapeutic Radiation Oncology and International Breast Cancer Study Group.

Karen is married, has 2 daughters, one a midwife, the other at University and 3 dogs. She loves the outdoors, hiking and long distance walking, travel, art in unexpected places and a good book.
